You spend hours searching for the perfect wallpaper and suddenly,
like a light bulb just lit up, you find just what you want.
Maybe you used a professional decorator. Or maybe you had a retail store
salesperson giving advise. Or maybe you found the book all by yourself in some
retail establishment.
There is an implied obligation, which sometimes is not so subtle, that you should
“support your local retailer” and put your money there. But it was you who did the
bulk of the work.
Why pay top dollar when you can get it online at discounted prices?
You can pay your
professional decorator the fixed fee for helping you select your
preferences. Pay for the value received. If you asked for advise, pay just for
that advise
But dont make it the decorator’s monetary advantage to waste your
money. If the decorator is being compensated by a percentage of the product
purchase, it would be to his financial benefit for you to select
product with a high profit margin. Such “decorators” are actually just
commissioned salespersons.
By price shopping online, you get prices are set to give a
fair profit margin no matter what product you select. Whatever you want to use,
you can find online. Normal discounts range in the 40 to 50 percent
area with some much better and honestly, a few not so good.
Normally you can get a better discount on wallpaper and border than you
can with fabric.
What about prices and discount? Lets say you go to a home
improvement store of some sort. They often buy stock wallpaper
and border by the truckload. This gives them a terrific discount
that is sometimes even better than what you can get online. They can then
sell that stock for 50 percent off or better.
But just
because they can give good prices does not necessarily mean that
they are giving a good price. Fifty off is not good if it should
be 60 off. Always check online to keep them honest.
Check out their
in-stock sale with our regular discount prices. Online pricing is
fully automatic on the internet so it costs nothing to get
a quote. Frankly if you can do
better with them I suggest you buy from their stock.
Watch out, however, for close outs. If they have plenty of
stock and even if it all has the same run number, you are not
home free until it is on your wall. A drawback with wallpaper
is that there is always a chance of a hidden defect
somewhere in the roll that you wont see until it is on the wall.
Suppose that it takes you about two weeks to get around to
putting it up and you find a defect. Will the close out still be
there?
What if you bought extra to cover your contingencies? Would
you be able to return the overage?
But after all that you find out, even with all the
wallpaper and border the store has in stock, you still prefer
something you have seen in one of their wallpaper books. That
store is more than willing to give a good deal on what it has in
stock. But the deal on the special order is not the same.
Normally, online retailers can beat their special order discounts by
about 10 percent or more. If you cant beat their price online by more
than a few percent we suggest you buy it from the store. Of
course youll never know unless you do check online. You
can take the online quote with you to the store and maybe they will
match the price.
Doug Johnson has been in the wallpaper business since the 1980’s. He has written the software that powers his site: http://www.wallpaperpirate.com This site is about 90% fully automatic. The customer fills in all the data about his/her order and that information is forwarded to the appropriate vendor for the actual fulfillment. If there is a question concerning the delivery status, the customer utilizes the “customer self service” feature which automatically contacts the vendor for update information. The results are then e-mailed to the customer and also posted on the website for customer access.
Doug has also developed a separate password protected site for wallpaper which is restricted from being sold over the open internet. This site is for designers and those exempt from the restrictions. Further information is available at: http://www.decoratingdiscount.com
Doug is available as a consultant for others who desire to establish businesses, both online and not.
He is presently helping to establish the Independent Christian On-Line Academy at: http://www.ICOLA.us
